Primitivo - a memory of summer
Primitivo is probably the most popular red wine variety among Polish consumers.
This variety is known around the world under various names. In Italy it's simply primitivo, in California it's zinfandel, in Croatia they call it crljenak.
In the past, all these wines were considered to be three completely different varieties due to their different places of cultivation. However, genetic studies conducted in the 1970s showed that Italian primitivo had the same genetic code as California zinfandel and Croatian crljenak.
It also turned out that historically the wine originated in Croatia. The seedlings arrived in Italy in the 18th century. The term "primitivo" appeared only in the 19th century and came from the Latin word "primativus", meaning “early maturing".
The indigenous region of Italian primitivo is Puglia, whose hot and dry climate favors the production of full-bodied, juicy, long, lingering, flowing, stout and balanced wines.
Smooth in the mouth, slightly spicy, with a delicate acidity in the finish that wine leaves the palate clean and ready for the next sip.
Dry aromas of ripe sweet cherries, cherries in rum, blackberries and vanilla with noticeable sweetness and soft tannin, make it a perfect match for Mediterranean cuisine, but not only that.
Primitivo goes perfectly with dishes based on tomato sauces. It goes well with pizza, burger, beef in any form (stew, pastrami, tartare), but also with Asian dishes. It is one of the few varieties that is suitable for chocolate desserts, especially those that also contain dried fruits.
